In order to get to get a decent practice in, I have to skate at the earliest sessions and making sure I am the first one on the ice fully warmed up and jumping at least 5 mins into the session so I can get in the jumps first. It is so frustrating, because I am a power skater that skates with a lot of speed and distance within my jumps. I am scared to death I'll take someone out because most skaters young or oder never seem to give me the same respect of ice time or even watch out for me. The struggle is real!SalToeLutzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11731599404990233760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-51269515001491225762015-11-01T18:14:27.521-08:002015-11-01T18:14:27.521-08:00Yes, once again, the clockwise skaters or lefties ...Yes, once again, the clockwise skaters or lefties have been left out. NO ONE moves out of our way and yet, we're expected to move when a skater decides to do their edge jumps in our lutz corner. In a perfect world, we would have our own sessions, but that's never going to happen.

Maybe you can come up with a creative way to tell a coach to stop having her students (yes, more than one at a time) spin in the lefty lutz corners. Yes, those corners that are shown to be for edge jumps. Every session is a lesson in futility because of this annoying coach, her three students at one time, and their determination to spin in the lutz corner. The only time they look out is when I've run into one of them, and I always say "Shouldn't you be spinning in the center and not in the corner?" They never learn.Skatecathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13584353013344184567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-63459745352616432512015-04-11T15:28:47.221-07:002015-04-11T15:28:47.221-07:00-How lovely it would be to see dance patterns set ...-How lovely it would be to see dance patterns set up - so those jumpers could get an idea of what to lookout for, as the blind and swift turn around in their jump zone as we try to start the European Waltz. Once a jumper went right over me as I ducked. Also so they do not congregate in the center edge, just where we need to make swift and blind turns.
-How about a limit of the number of times a coach is allowed to play a student's music during one session? Their demand for priority can become very tiresome to everyone else.
-what about practicing the MiTF? last week a teen hit me and knocked me over as I did rockers as she landed her lutz or something -came from my blind side.
-wouldn't it be nice if skaters did not take over a circle for most of a session (especially slow and beginning), but cut their exercises into lobes that had flow ACROSS the length of the ice.
-what about a coach who insists on running their very slow adult across the ice - like 'lobes on a line'? a real traffic jam for all others.
last: surely the writer means in the opening this is a good example of how to manage politely, not a good example of the impossible problems...?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-844341366118840452013-07-15T17:20:25.667-07:002013-07-15T17:20:25.667-07:00This is wonderful! When the rink closes to the public/ figure skaters at prime time hours 5PM- 8:30PM and sell to hockey, and kids don't get out of school till 3 or 3:30 and have traffic and homework, it makes impossible for the public/ skaters to get to the ice rink and or practice and have lessons. 95% of school kids cant get to the ice rink till 4PM. That leaves 1 hour to teach. The coach will only be able to teach 2 or 3 students in the afternoon at that rate. Ice rinks used to offer more public ice time in the evening weekdays also. Also, most rinks offer less ice time for public session in afternoons on weekends too.. When I was growing up and learned to skate at Ice Capades Chalet, Santa Monica, CA. , they had 5 hours to skate Friday , Sat. and Sun. for public and figure skaters. We learned quicker because we had more ice time , and had more fun because we learned quicker. Also too many rinks built to close together is a problem keeping business etc...I was told rinks should not built less then 10 miles apart to do well. Less ice time , too many rinks to close together, more coaches then business coming in, all make it hard to make a living teaching figure skating. And it makes it easier to get into Hockey since hockey is during prime hours to make it more convenient to skate at that time 5-8:30PM.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12146905343728273270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-19025265929222984352013-02-04T10:39:03.284-08:002013-02-04T10:39:03.284-08:00Here is CNN's reason for this problem: http://...Here is CNN's reason for this problem: http://outfront.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/02/whatever-happened-to-figure-skating/#Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08946111749197835395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-41413973223134518622013-01-21T15:43:08.615-08:002013-01-21T15:43:08.615-08:00You're leaving out the other half of this-- wh...You're leaving out the other half of this-- why are there not more boys in figure skating? We are required to enforce the rules to maintain our sanction, and this is their professional organization's rules; not ours. Unfortunately in every arena there are those who try to fly "under the radar", but Southport Skating Club is one small club that works hard to zone in on those bypassing the rules by making them tow the line or not allowing them to coach at our tests/competitions.Valhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15857821648174281728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-76532367058424396002012-02-29T12:11:20.230-08:002012-02-29T12:11:20.230-08:00God, I've wanted to say something just like th...God, I've wanted to say something just like this for the past three years, but I don't have a blog! LOL.

I don't skate - have never stepped foot on the ice, in fact - so I can't speak to a lot of the more intricate points of the sport and the scoring. But I have been a fan since the late 1980s.

There are parts of the new system I like and a lot that I don't. But it's the reality of the sport now and going back to the 6.0 system would just dredge up the same problems everybody hated about it back then.

Where I get frustrated isn't with the scoring system or the skaters themselves. I tend to put more blame on choreographers and some coaches who seem to fight the system tooth-and-nail rather than embracing it. It's completely possible to make magical programs that rack up a lot of points and still make the audience leap to their feet - the programs you mentioned, plus Chan's Take Five and Concerto de Aranjuez, Buttle's Samson and Delilah, etc. I feel like a lot of the top choreographers stretched themselves too thin, giving great work to Skaters A and maybe B and crap to skaters C, D, E and F.

From the outside looking in (and please correct my assumption if I'm wrong), it seems that, with a few exceptions, coaches are largely responsible for music selection and packaging. So again, it's hard for me to fault the skaters when they might not have as much input into their programs than the ones who take more control (like Johnny Weir, for example).

Also, without watching videos from major competitions going back 20 years, I think it's a myth that there are more falls under IJS and that skaters had cleaner performances under 6.0. I want to see clean programs as much as anyone, but that's an argument I just don't buy.BSeditorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07263769832777573036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-78597316605448211232012-02-28T09:50:11.786-08:002012-02-28T09:50:11.786-08:00Jimmie,
Fabulous post! I couldn't agree more...Jimmie,

Fabulous post! I couldn't agree more. I think those who advocate a return to the 6.0 system overlook many of the problems it promoted. I, for one, enjoy seeing skaters need to work to fill the spaces in-between their jumps and spins with more than just lots of backward crossovers. In my opinion, it actually promotes programs that are more interesting to watch. The 10% bonus in the long program actually gets skaters to put elements into the second half of their program, which I think is a vast improvement over some performances not so long ago where every jump was performed in the two minutes of the program and the rest was filler.

Perhaps one of the best aspects, though, is the fact that, theoretically, anybody can win. If you perform the elements well, you can win, even if you are new on the scene or less well known. I can't speak for others, but I certainly don't long for a return of the days where someone who attempts a quad but fails miserably beats someone who does not attempt a quad but performs all of their elements extremely well. I do not think we would be better off returning to a system where a skater's name and/or reputation can hold him or her up in the placement even with a poor performance.

Most importantly, as you point out, the scores for artistry are still there and rewarded. What today's skaters lack in edge quality and artistry is not the fault of the system. If anything, this system helps draw attention to the fact that we are not paying enough attention to this very important part of our training, and how can we improve if we are never made aware of our weaknesses?

Thanks for a great post!Lorihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09087498064354519613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-33750769780705018612012-02-28T08:21:26.368-08:002012-02-28T08:21:26.368-08:00Thank you Jimmie! Those who propose going back to 6.0 constantly short-change today's skaters whether intentional or not.

Teach the youngsters the basic skills and they can thrive under any scoring system. Hopefully USFSA will find a way to incorporate some form of the original figures into their required skills programs.Petehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16341711244967679214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-6705085440192722392012-02-27T18:52:01.602-08:002012-02-27T18:52:01.602-08:00I'm just grateful that I was a new coach in yo...I'm just grateful that I was a new coach in your area when you were doing seminars to help us learn how to teach those basic skills to the 4 year olds!Alexandrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04087069977867729538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-76319586009832195082012-02-10T14:14:34.821-08:002012-02-10T14:14:34.821-08:00Usually I do not read article on blogs, however I ...Usually I do not read article on blogs, however I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to take a look at and do it! In any sport development is achieved through various levels of strain applied to the body and mind. Any training regimine requires this. Those who do not understand that sweat and sometimes tears are required to advvance from one level to another, for what ever reason, seem to be the first to point accusitory fingers.
Once all the dust settles the question remaining isn't "does this serve the general good?' but rather, "does this raise each individual to be better than thay were before?" Separate standards open the doors for these predators and wreak havoc on our profession. These issues need to be fully exposed with swift justice and followed up with communications/actions put in place to ensure our skaters and parents that the events will never occur again. Our children desire our protection and trust as much as our skills as teachers.Tracyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11346618002832106460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-81814472496366272392011-11-30T12:01:23.378-08:002011-11-30T12:01:23.378-08:00Thanks for addressing this. When a rink decides who has access to coach at their facility they need to have accountability for the actions of their coaching staff. To simply state that they are independent contractors shouldn't exempt them from ensuring a safe environment for the youth the rink is selling ice time too. The PSA and USFS can't control everything, and right now I think there is a "loop hole" in terms of rink management's role in all of these issues.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32742635.post-4448847407994328952011-10-24T08:17:56.647-07:002011-10-24T08:17:56.647-07:00I finally got the chance to watch Rise over the we...I finally got the chance to watch Rise over the weekend and was so moved. I was also awed by how your generation of skaters were the direct link to this group of skaters and coaches.
